Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra coming to Melfort

For the first time ever, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra will be making an appearance in Melfort.

CEO Mark Turner told northeastNOW they wanted to make a trip out, for one very simple reason.

“Simply because we haven’t,” he said. “We have a number of patrons out in your region and we haven’t had a chance to get out to the Kerry Vickar Centre, so this was a great opportunity to bring the concert to them.

The orchestra will be presenting Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror, as part of their silent film tour.

Turner added this event gives them the opportunity to deliver film culture to the area.

“It means a lot to us because particularly when we do go out on tour, we’re bringing stuff to communities like Melfort that, only the symphony can bring.”

The play has been described as a “quirky way to celebrate the Halloween season.”

It is a rendition of the 1922 Nosferatu, which makes it the 100th anniversary of the horror film.

According to Turner, not only will this provide entertainment, but it has the potential to provide education, as well.

“Find out what we can do for communities like Melfort in the future and how we can help. We have a lot of music education and programming, and we’re doing more and more of that, across the larger region of the province.”

This marks the first tour for the Orchestra, since before the pandemic and Melfort is the fifth of five stops on the tour.

Turner explained it gives the musicians more practice to really master their craft.

“Typically when you do a big concert, there’s a huge amount of work and you do one concert and then it’s done and over. However, when we tour the region, we get to actually do that multiple times. So by the time we’re in Melfort, you guys actually get the best performance of all.”

The performance will begin at 2 p.m. at the Kerry Vickar Centre (KVC), this Sunday, October 23rd.

Ticket costs will range from $20-$41, depending on age and time of purchase and are available at the KVC Box Office.
