Communities in Bloom are celebrating 20 seasons

With their eyes set on replacing the white of snow with fresh flowers, Melfort Communities in Bloom (CiB) is gearing up to celebrate 20 successful seasons.

A season filled with flowery surprises for the community with an expected cost of $14,000, CiB’s Peggy George told northeastNOW that this year will be one for the books.

“That’s a big number to look at and with it being the 20th year, we are looking to maintain everything and get it up to code.”

With the large price tag, George says they are asking the community to help where they can.

“Fundraising takes a lot of time and effort. Since COVID has hit that has been harder and harder to do safely. So fundraising is a bit of a quandary right now.”

The organization is able to apply for certain grants, but CiB still relies on donations and thanks the people of Melfort for their continued support.

To kick off the donations for 2023, Accession Chapter #96 Eastern Star made a surprise contribution.

“It’s always fun when people give you money and it’s even more fun when it’s unexpected. It was a great surprise and very much appreciated. We can’t possibly do what we do without financial support.”

After winning a national award last year, George said it is added incentive to step up even more this year.

“We want to be bigger and better than we have been in the past. When it comes down to the evaluation is just about us. We’re not we are in competition with other communities but we really are competing against ourselves.”

The organization is celebrating a historic milestone this year by adding more than greenery to the community.

“We’ve done a couple of new art projects and they are going to be installed sometime in May or June.”

CiB isn’t quite sure yet if they will be competing at a national level yet but that doesn’t mean they aren’t focused on helping beautify the community.

For those wanting to contribute to the community by planting in their gardens, the flower colour of the year is purple.
