Métis Nation to construct new homes in Île-a-la-Crosse

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan (MN-S) is doing its part to address homelessness and housing shortages in northern Saskatchewan.

On the opening day of its Housing and Homelessness Conference on Tuesday, MN-S President Glen McCallum announced $1.5 million in contributions to Northern Region III for its Regional Housing Strategy.

This will result in the construction of eight new affordable and accessible housing units in Île-a-la-Crosse, thanks to a partnership with the Village, Sakitawak Development Corporation, and Métis Local 21.

“We hear from citizens in all regions of the province, north, central, and south, who tell us about the inadequate living conditions and housing shortages in their communities,” McCallum said. “Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction but much more is needed. This conference is designed to bring all parties together to develop solutions and distinctions-based approaches to homelessness and housing that will provide a strong direction all governments can use.”

Construction of six tiny homes and two three-bedroom houses will start this spring and is scheduled to be finished in 2024.

The goal of the Saskatchewan Housing and Homelessness Conference is to work with stakeholders from across the province to discuss solutions to housing issues and homelessness in Saskatchewan.

“It’s so important to remember that people living on the streets are our relatives, our family members and our friends,” said MN-S Housing and Infrastructure Minister Loretta King.

“When we listen to their stories and experiences, we are reminded that we are similar in so many ways.”

The “Building Community – Saskatchewan Housing and Homelessness Conference” runs Tuesday and Wednesday at the Sheraton Cavalier in Saskatoon.
