Cumberland College showcasing industry variety and opportunity throughout the northeast

Cumberland College is set to host three consecutive open houses at each of its campus locations.

Tisdale (today), Nipawin (tomorrow), and Melfort (Thursday) will each see an open house from 5-7 p.m.

Programs to be showcased include: business, early childhood education, health care cook, office administration, university, adult basic education, disability support worker, electrician, industrial mechanic, primary care paramedic, agriculture science, continuing care assistant, and practical nurse.

Local employers and program area experts will also be in attendance, as they share about the worker needs the area is facing, and the jobs that are available throughout the northeast.

Selene Weisberg, the college’s recruitment and development coordinator told northeastNOW that’s a big factor in prospective students staying here, living here, working here, and providing here.

“We do have also lots of employers coming, so we’re really excited to have those types of people, and we’re just hoping for a good turnout to let our communities know that we offer all these kinds of things. We want to make sure that when students graduate they have local jobs to come to,” she said.

“I think that’s a large part of why employers would want to come to an open house to recruit those people straight into their organization. We’re definitely mindful of wanting to contribute to the community that way and making sure students have good jobs when they’re done here, or have opportunities to get further education too.”

These open houses will mark the first opportunity the college has had to do so, since before the pandemic.

As of right now, local healthcare and small business needs seem to be the greatest concern posed to the college.

“We see lots of SHA representatives, so that seems to be a big need in our community right now, is to try and help out with that shortage. I think that we have been getting some good feedback from local employers as to what they’re needing and how we can help with their employability needs,” Weisberg added.

“It’s also nice to just have members of the community come in and share what they are needing, like even small businesses and what the need is for them because obviously, we would like to be able to provide that high educational standard for our local businesses so that they can get good quality people in there.”
