5-0 Shutout

Mustangs dismantle Hawks for their seventh straight loss

Feb 4, 2024 | 4:09 PM

The Melfort Mustangs had a lot of fun in Nipawin on Saturday night as they took down their most bitter rivals with ease.

The Mustangs shut out the Hawks by a score of 5-0, as they led the game for nearly all 60 minutes.

After Ryan Duguay scored just 31 seconds in Melfort never looked back and dominated the game, despite it being their first in nine days.

“Especially a win in the Cage, it feels so good. The guys at the showcase stayed fresh, then the guys back at home I worked them pretty good, so there was no rust and we got things squared up right away,” explained assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“From top to bottom, we had character guys, everyone came here to work and we came out on top.”

Duguay and Logan Belton each had a goal and an assist, Chase Friedt-Mohr had a goal and a pair of helpers, Aidyn Hutchinson had a goal and three apples, and James Venne made 29 saves for his third shutout in the last month.

The win for the Stangs also coincidentally gave the Hawks their seventh loss in a row as Nipawin was outscored 13-0 on the weekend.

“Five-rip in the Cage, just shutting them out in their home barn is awesome,” added Scherger.

“They lost 8-0 to Flin Flon on Friday night, so we knew they were gonna come out hard, so we just wanted to weather the storm and we had a heavy pace and came out on top.”

The Blue and Green are now 3 and 2 on their season-long six-game road trip which concludes on Tuesday in Weyburn.
