Noon-hour supervision withdrawal to affect NESD Friday

Mar 7, 2024 | 5:00 PM

Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF) job action is once again affecting the North East School Division (NESD).

Teachers are withdrawing noon-hour services in NESD and a number of other divisions across the province on Friday.

Director of Education Stacy Lair told northeastNOW the focus of the division from the start of job action is on student learning goals being met and the safety of the students.

Each division has handled the noon-hour supervision withdrawal differently, with NESD moving the duty-free period to the end of the school day. Teachers supervise students during their lunch break during their teaching time, and school is dismissed 40 to 50 minutes earlier than normal.

Lair said the decision to end school early during this job action made sense for the division, who had checked in with a variety of communities and school community councils before Christmas.

“We had, in almost every community and every school, feedback from folks that we didn’t have enough volunteers to cover than noon-hour supervision period,” Lair explained. “So what that meant was we didn’t have a way to maintain student safety at lunch time without having students being sent home.”

Lair said in rural Saskatchewan that would have meant using busing with the students not having access to a bus to get back to school after the lunch break. She added student learning time would have been compromised under those circumstances.

The division has posted contingency plans in event of teacher job action on their website, through social media, and through texts and emails to parents.
