Hawks head to Melfort trying to keep playoff hopes alive
The Nipawin Hawks face another must-win game Friday when they travel to Melfort to meet the Mustangs in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.
Nipawin will begin the night seven points behind Estevan for the final playoff spot, the Hawks can still catch Kindersley as well who is in seventh, eight points up on Nipawin. The Hawks were tasked with a must win contest Tuesday in Yorkton and need at least seven points in their final four games. The team started the week strong with a victory over the Terriers Tuesday, much to the applause of Head Coach tad Kozun.
“We got off to a good start and kept rolling,” he said of Nipawin’s 5-2 triumph at the Westland Insurance Arena. “The one thing I really liked about it was we never wavered from anything we were doing, and we were able to get that knockout goal late in the game which is obviously huge.”
Melfort has been red-hot of late winning eight straight games including a 3-1 win over Flin Flon Wednesday at the Northern Lights Palace. The Mustangs have taken three of five games against Nipawin in the season series, the Hawks have points in three of the five contests but have lost the last three after taking the first two matchups of the six-game season series. Kozun said the club knows if they don’t get the victory the postseason will be out of reach.
