Barks sentenced

Melfort man sentenced to less than 2 years in drug trafficking case

A Melfort man facing several drug and weapon charges has learned his fate.

David Barks, 40, pleaded guilty to a variety of charges stemming from several arrests since the fall of 2022.

Barks and two others were charged in October 2022 after a Saskatchewan RCMP Prince Albert Crime Reduction Team (CRT) investigation.

The two others had their charges stayed in that case.

In Melfort Provincial Court on Monday, Barks received a sentence of two years less-a-day in jail for one count of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Barks received concurrent sentences of 18 months for possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and six months for possession of a firearm without a license.

Barks received time served sentences for charges stemming from other incidents, including the discovery of drugs and weapons after a traffic stop while he was out on bail from his first arrest.

Barks was also given a 10-year firearm prohibition and was issued a DNA order.

The Crown and defence were largely in agreement with the sentencing proposal reached with the guilty pleas.

Judge Lloyd Stang told Barks that drug trafficking is harmful to the community, and also to the individual that is responsible for the trafficking and their families. Stang said Barks had a nice career going, working in the same place for 16 years before getting mixed up in the drug trade.

Barks had no criminal record before his arrest in October of 2022.

When asked by the judge whether he wanted to address the court, Barks said he accepts that what he did was wrong.

“I have taken full responsibility for what I have done,” Barks told the court.

Barks is engaged, and his fiancée was in the gallery to support him.
