Carrot River High School to be demolished

Apr 2, 2024 | 3:07 PM

The demolition of the old Carrot River High School is underway this week.

Much of the facility is being knocked down after students from Grades 5-12 moved into the new K-12 Carrot River Valley School earlier this year.

North East School Division (NESD) Director of Education Stacy Lair told northeastNOW it was important for the division to let the community know what was happening, and to ask people to stay away from the site while the work was getting underway.

“From a distance, go take a peek if it’s of interest, and just try and stay clear,” Lair explained.

She said the Grades 5-12 students are settling into the new facility.

“We look forward to having a grand opening for all of our students, as our Kindergarten (to Grade) 4’s join them in the fall,” Lair said. “Looking forward to that grand opening when the community comes in.”

The Grade 12 graduation ceremony will be the first held in the new Carrot River Valley school.

Lair said the former school was bright and welcoming but had served its purpose.

“We’ve had some structural challenges with the building and so ultimately it had to be decommissioned,” Lair said. “It was a school that looked bright and beautiful on the inside but had some challenges with the structure itself.”

The school wasn’t one of the division’s oldest schools, but the structural situation meant that it needed to be replaced. Students will still use the gym of the old building, which was a fairly recent addition.

Lair said Carrot River High School has been a huge part of the community for many years.

“In rural Saskatchewan we are often attached to those buildings and those places so we wanted to let the community know so they could share their memories and have a farewell as they maybe take a peek and look and have a chance as well to see our new school.”
