Beeland, Carrot River Co-op members vote to merge; Parkland vote to come

Apr 11, 2024 | 11:14 AM

UPDATE: On Thursday night, Parkland Co-op members voted on the potential merger. The numbers were 343 yes and 254 no.

This means membership voted against the proposed amalgamation as the requirement is 67 per cent voting in favour to pass.

There will be at least one Co-op merger happening in the northeast.

Members of the Carrot River Co-op voted in favour of merging with Beeland Co-op and Parkland Co-op.

At Wednesday night’s amalgamation meeting, Carrot River Co-op members voted 100-22 in favour of the merger.

Members of Beeland Co-op voted in favour of the merger by a vote of 118 yes to 12 no at their amalgamation meeting Tuesday night.

General Manager Todd Svenson told northeastNOW last month that the merger would lead to more efficiencies and increased buying power.

As part of this amalgamation vote, when two Co-ops vote in favour, the two will amalgamate whether the third Co-op votes in favour of the merger or not.

The third and final vote is slated for Thursday night.

Pineland Co-op members will vote on whether to amalgamate at Hudson Bay Brooks Hall and Porcupine Plain Community Hall at 6:30 p.m.

A similar vote was put to members in 2022 but Parkland members voted against the merger. In that vote, all three Co-op members needed to approve the amalgamation, so it did not proceed.
