Mustangs embarrass Bombers in Game 1 of SJHL Finals

Apr 20, 2024 | 11:20 AM

The Melfort Mustangs made a statement in Game 1 of the SJHL Finals by routing the Flin Flon Bombers on their home ice, by a score of 9-2.

After Flin Flon opened the scoring in the league championship, it was all Melfort after that, as they now lead the series 1-0.

“Coming in here, it’s a wild atmosphere and the boys came out heavy. When they talked about weathering the storm, I told them you be the storm and to start off, that’s exactly what they did, so good on them and I’m super proud of the guys,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“From top to bottom, I think everyone scored on each line or something like that, so that’s awesome. You talk about depth, everyone played well from top to bottom.”

Game 2 will go Saturday night, as the Mustangs now have the opportunity to steal both on the road before heading back home.

The Bombers will likely come out firing though, in hopes of responding, however, may have to do so without a few of their top guys, after they laid a couple of dirty shots in frustration on Friday.

“The fans got a little bit of disappointment there, so they’re gonna come out hard and we know that. We told the boys to be confident, not cocky and that’s the biggest thing. Just play with lots of confidence and continue to do what we did, come out even harder, and we’ll be good,” Scherger added.

“You never want to see those kinds of plays, obviously they’re frustrated, so we said let’s go make them pay. Nine to two doesn’t look good, so good on us.”

One final factor will be who will start in net for Flin Flon.

Harmon Laser-Hume gave up seven goals on 30 shots, before Kenneth Marquart relieved him, stopping eight of 10, as both goals against him came while his team was on the kill.

“We keyed in on shooting the puck, we shot from every single angle and it seemed to go in, so we’ll stick with that,” Scherger told northeastNOW.

Game 2 can once again be heard on 105CJVR.
