Getting closer: Nipawin Heliport Project receives $50k donation from SaskPower

May 6, 2024 | 4:29 PM

The Nipawin Heliport project has received another financial boost.

During an event on Monday, SaskPower presented a $50,000 cheque.

Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw, Twin Lakes District Planning Commission Chair Jerry Kindrat, and Nipawin Hospital representatives were also on hand for the presentation at the future helipad location.

“The construction of a helipad at the Nipawin hospital will be a major benefit to the families and communities in Saskatchewan’s northeast region,” Fred Bradshaw said in SaskPower’s news release. “I’d like to thank SaskPower for this generous contribution, and for their many investments into the communities in which they operate.”

Scott McGregor of SaskPower Media Relations told northeastNOW the company was pleased to be able to donate to the project.

“We are committed to giving back to the province we serve,” McGregor said. He called the donation to the Nipawin Heliport project a “worthwhile investment” that will “help enhance the ability to respond to emergency care services.”

McGregor said the project ties into SaskPower’s commitment to safety, and the company has a very close connection to the NIpawin area with the hydro station just outside the community.

“It just made sense for us to donate to this worthwhile cause.”

The project’s planning began back in 2018 following the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, with fundraising starting last year. About $600,000 has been raised toward the $800,000 project.

“Following the Humboldt Broncos tragedy, it was clear that we needed to improve our hospital’s ability to respond to urgent and critical care incidents,” Jerry Kindrat, Chair of the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission said in the news release. “SaskPower’s donation represents a huge step towards building this important facility.”

Construction on the helipad is anticipated to start this spring.
