Melfort sidewalk repairs

Sidewalk repairs underway in Melfort’s business core

Jul 22, 2024 | 2:00 PM

Look for sidewalk work to continue in Melfort’s downtown core for a few weeks.

Significant sidewalk repairs are taking place on three blocks of Main Street and several other areas of the city.

Director of Public Works Lydia Steffen told northeastNOW sidewalk repairs are prioritized based on safety and infrastructure needs.

“Budget constraints typically limit repairs to high-traffic areas where pedestrian safety and accessibility are critical as per city bylaw,” Steffen said. “This targeted approach maximizes the impact of available funds while addressing the most urgent community needs.”

Steffen said affected residents and businesses have been notified of the work being done through construction notices and updates.

“Construction activities will be staggered to avoid simultaneous disruptions, with work zones confined to one block at a time,” Steffen said. “This approach aims to minimize inconvenience and ensure localized impact during the project.”

Steffen said sidewalks are a crucial component of urban infrastructure, contributing to the functionality and connectivity of any city. She added repair and replacement in the business core is important to address safety and accessibility.

“Well-maintained sidewalks provide a safe pathway for pedestrians, reducing the risk of trips, falls, and accidents,” said Steffen. “Sidewalks also ensure that everyone, including individuals with disabilities, can navigate our downtown environment independently and safely.”

Work on the sidewalks began Monday, and Steffen said the contractor has advised the city the work should be complete within two weeks, weather permitting.
