Melfort updates residents on contingency plans during Canada Post strike

The City of Melfort is advising residents about potential effects from a Canada Post strike.

About 55,000 Canada Post employees went on strike Friday, after the two sides failed to come to an agreement.

Melfort Director of Corporate Services Lydia Steffen told northeastNOW the strike may have several impacts on City operations, especially in areas where physical delivery of mail is involved.

“While many City services continue uninterrupted, residents and businesses may experience delays in receiving certain mail-based communications,” Steffen explained.

For residents who receive utility bills by traditional mail, there could be delays in receiving statements. Steffen said that could potentially affect payment deadlines.

“We encourage residents to sign up for online utility billing as a proactive way to avoid these delays,” said Steffen. She added digital billing ensures that bills are delivered promptly and securely via email.

Steffen said any notices from the City of Melfort, including property tax information, permits, or other documents that are typically mailed may be delayed. She recommended that residents check their online accounts and City portals for updates and to make sure they don’t miss any important information.

“Residents and businesses who need to mail payments, documents, or applications to the City may experience delays,” said Steffen. The City encourages using online payment options and electronic document submissions when possible.

“Overall, while the strike may create some temporary challenges, we are committed to supporting our residents with alternatives and ensuring that City services remain accessible and efficient,” Steffen said.

She reminded residents that City Hall is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4pm.
