Mustangs win fourth straight one-goal game

Nov 23, 2024 | 11:20 AM

The Melfort Mustangs pushed their win streak to four games on Friday night, taking down the Kindersley Klippers, 4-3.

For the Mustangs it was yet a stressful night as they scored just once more than their opponents.

The victory marked Melfort’s fourth straight game in which they won by just a single marker.

“We do not like winning games by one, it’s a lot of stress, but the thing about that though is it builds character, and it really shows that we can win a game when it’s really tight. The biggest thing in the third is that we got the job done,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

In what was a very back-and-forth first half of the game, the first 32 minutes saw all the goals of the game.

After Zayden Sadlemyer retook the lead for the Stangs on a beautiful dangle and snipe, it was time for the club to bear down defensively and ride it out for a victory.

“The biggest thing is when they scored that goal and scored another one, we bounced back. The biggest thing is responding, getting back to it right away and not getting down. That’s a big thing for the boys that they’re learning and they’re good at it, you got to fight through it, and in the third period, I think we dominated that whole frame,” Scherger added.

The Blue and Green are in Kindersley again tonight to take on the Klippers for the second game of the weekend set.

The plan is to start some periods a little better this time around and be more defensive for the entire game.

“The starts are the biggest thing, our starts in the first period and the second period, we weren’t really there, so we got to come out there with lots of energy, be heavy on the forecheck and commit to our D zone. If we do all that then we’ll be good,” concluded Scherger.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the pregame show on CJVR beginning at 7:15 p.m.
