Mustangs rout Stars 8-1

Dec 1, 2024 | 4:15 AM

There was no doubt on Friday night whether or not the Melfort Mustangs were gonna beat the Battlefords North Stars, as they scored early and often en route to an 8-1 victory.

Ten different Mustangs registered a point on the night, while seven of them had multiple, led by Reilley Kotai, who had three goals and three assists, rightfully being named the player of the game.

“I mean, I got to give credit to my teammates and the guys I’m playing with, they’re helping me out too,” Kotai told northeastNOW. “It’s great that we’re rolling and we just want to keep that going.”

The 8-1 thumping was Melfort’s seventh win in a row, as they’ve now created seven points between themselves and second place in the league standings through just 22 games.

An impressive 18 and 4 on the year, the first place Stangs were happy to have a blowout game after so much of their recent ones were quite tight and stressful.

“It was definitely nice, good to finally get an outburst of offence and be able to shut it down on defence at the same time,” added Kotai.

“We go into every game wanting to win it, and we’re just taking it a game at a time. Instead of focusing on first place, we’re looking ahead to the next one, and we got Estevan on Wednesday, so that’s what’s on our minds right now.”

With the six-point night, Kotai has now vaulted himself to second in the league in points with 30, which just so happened to come against his older brother’s former team.

He and Madden Mulawka, who remained undefeated this season with a 23-save performance, will now try to continue and carry the load.

“Mulawka has been something else, he’s been so reliable and consistent when he goes in the net. Whether he lets in one or two, you know he’s gonna continue to give us all of his effort. He’s just been consistent, great and so solid back there,” Kotai concluded.

“It was a little bit of a coincidence that my six-point night happened to come against Josh’s former team, but it was definitely a fun night to play against them and I always look forward to it.”
