Hawks points streaks snapped in shut out by La Ronge

On Saturday night the Nipawin Hawks were shut out 3-0 by the La Ronge Ice Wolves snapping the team’s five game-home point streak and their four-game overall point streak in the process.

In Friday’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) schedule Nipawin outpaced the Ice Wolves 7-4 on the road, but the return date in Nipawin was a different game as Graham Brown stopped all 20 shots the Hawks fired his way. Hawks Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team simply ran out of gas after three long weeks and several injuries and illnesses.

“Tonight was one of those nights where we just didn’t have it,” he admitted. “It was kind of a boring game; our legs just weren’t there. We’ve been playing a lot of hockey, we’re down bodies, it obviously caught up to us tonight.”

Nipawin went into the game scoring a dozen goals in a pair of games during the week and seeking another win at home, the SJHL club had not lost in regulation at home since Nov. 23. Kozun said the team picking up three of six points was a “good week” and Saturday’s result won’t change the team’s mindset going into the final week of the 2024 portion of the schedule.

“I know we talk about consistency all the time, but we have been pretty consistent here as of late. These games are going to happen, so you throw it out the window, have a day of rest Sunday and back to work Monday to prepare for Tuesday,” he said after Saturday’s loss.

Next up for the Hawks is a trip to Flin Flon on Tuesday to face the Bombers, this weekend Nipawin will meet the Mustangs in a weekend home and home series before the Christmas break.

Tuesday’s and Saturday’s games will be broadcasted on 750 Beach Radio starting with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m., faceoff will be 7:30 p.m.
