Humboldt football player commits to Prince George Kodiaks

May 28, 2025 | 4:29 PM

A Humboldt local has committed to continuing his football career past just his high school days, and is hoping it’ll last as long as possible.

Humboldt Collegiate Institute Mohawk and Saskatchewan Selects centre, Tyson Ilg, is now a Prince George Kodiak.

“I’m really excited to play there, I’ve been in talks with the head coach for a while, and Prince George is a really nice place. Obviously, going 15 hours away from home won’t be an easy thing, but having a great coaching staff and just the right program there will make it a lot easier… I’m not quitting football until I can’t play anymore, I’m going to keep going as far as I can until I don’t get an offer from somewhere,” Ilg told northeastNOW.

“I never knew if I was going to be able to play football after high school and make it to the CJFL, so I’m very grateful to get to this point… it doesn’t matter how bad you are when you start something or how little resources you have, the only person that’s going to make you get to where you need to be is you, so if you put in the work and you believe in yourself, you will make it.”

Ilg was up in Prince George from May 8-13 for their training camp, so he’s now familiarized himself with the area.

The team also found him a journeyman to go apprentice with when he’s up there, as he’ll be training in heavy-duty mechanics.

Ilg is currently in his Grade 12 year in his hometown of Humboldt and will have hardly any time between when he graduates and leaves for B.C.

“I’ll be graduating on the 27th of June, and then I’ll be there on the 1st of July… I’m very excited for that, but I’m also very worried, because I’ve never had this level of independence, which I’m sure is a thing with many seniors when graduating. It’s a lot bigger of a situation when there’s no family relatively near you for help if you need it, so the only help that I’ll have would be from my billet program,” he added.

“I began with tackle football in my Grade 9 year in Humboldt, and I started as one of the worst kids on the team. Within a week or two, though, I started to figure it out, and the seniors started to hype me up, and honestly, just the community is like a family. Everyone in Humboldt is there to support you, so from that point on, as I got better, I figured I might be able to get to the next level.

“My love for football came from the contact and physicality of it and I didn’t want it to be done after my senior year.”

Ilg’s improvement also came a lot from his two seasons with the Sask Selects, as that’s where he actually met Kodiaks head coach Jamie Boreham, a former Grey Cup Champion punter and placekicker with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

There, Boreham invited Ilg to the team’s tryout camp, and the rest, they say, is history.
