Fluctuating temperatures an issue

Warm weather causing icy conditions in Melfort

Feb 9, 2026 | 1:33 PM

The City of Melfort continues to try to tackle snow and ice buildup on the streets.

Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk said the warmer weather over the past week or so has allowed crews to catch up on snow removal.

“Crews were able to clear the excess snow piles and ridges that had accumulated along Saskatchewan Drive, which is a task that is better suited to warmer weather,” Cipywnyk said.

She said that it allows city crews to be more readily available to tackle current and future snow events.

The warmer weather can be a challenge, however, with the freeze/thaw cycle leading to ice buildup on sidewalks and roads.

“Our crew monitors the road conditions during these times and applies sand and salt as appropriate along busy streets and the major intersections where ice is likely to form overnight,” Cipywnyk said.

The problem arises when temperatures get too warm. Cipywnyk said the sand and salt are less effective when temperatures are above freezing, and it often gets washed away from driving lanes onto the edge of city streets.

“If the warm weather continues, crews will begin clearing and thawing the storm sewer catch basins to collect the melt water.”

Cipywnyk reminds residents that pushing snow from your property onto the street is against Melfort’s Snow Clearing bylaw, as it creates a potential hazard for drivers to navigate.

“The city also would like to remind snow removal contractors and homeowners that if they are hauling snow away from their property, to dispose of the snow in the correct areas, not in back alleys, city parking lots, or around fire hydrants,” said Cipywnyk.

She asked drivers and pedestrians to proceed with caution while temperatures continue to fluctuate, as it leads to icy conditions on city streets.
