Dobersheck was killed in a Melfort hotel back in March of 2024. Her long-term partner Cody Chubey is on trial for second-degree murder.

“We’re showing up here today to push for recognition of her life and for justice. This is incredibly important to us because she leaves behind three young children who shouldn’t be enduring this kind of pain. They not only lost their mom, but they’re losing their father in this trial too,” said Dobersheck’s aunt, Dinah Marion.

“We want to see justice served because she didn’t deserve this to happen to her. She was a loving mother of three who took really good care of her family. She was also a very outgoing person who cared for and loved everyone. A lot of women go through domestic violence, so hopefully, this is an eye opener for a lot of people to leave those kinds of situations and protect their families.”

At the time of her death, Dobersheck worked with North East Outreach & Support Services (NEOSS) in Melfort. The women’s shelter and crisis line offers services across the Northeast, including Melfort, Nipawin and Tisdale for women and children in domestic violence situations.

“She loved her job… women deserve better, they’re our life givers, and they support our children. She worked with a lot of women who dealt with domestic violence, and she experienced that as well, and it took her life,” Marion added.

“Domestic violence is alive, and it’s hidden behind many doors. A lot of women don’t know how to deal with it, so we need more proper support systems, and the awareness needs to be out there more.”

Plenty of NEOSS members attended the march, which started in front of the courthouse while Chubey’s trial began inside. The group headed down Main St. and turned right on Burrow’s Ave., passing the Marguerite Riel Centre and Melfort City Hall, before returning to Main St. and the courthouse by way of Macleod Ave.

“When Danielle came to us, she wanted to work with the children because a lot of them have come out of traumatic situations. She was just a natural when it came to looking after these kids, and she had so much love. This just strengthens our resolve to go out there and try to help as many people as possible with our women’s shelter outreach programs,” explained NEOSS Executive Director Joan Bear.

“Domestic violence is alive and well in Saskatchewan, even though a lot of communities try to say it doesn’t exist. Melfort is a remote and rural area, so we’re looking at what we’re doing to keep our ladies safe, whether they’re Indigenous or new newcomers to Saskatchewan, or farm ladies. We want to make sure that they’re safe in all regards,” she said.

The trial is expected to last until Friday. northeastNOW reporter Cam Lee will have coverage from inside the courtroom
