Late season snow to wreak havoc in northeast, central areas

The forecast has been updated for the major snowstorm set to track through the northern part of the province over the coming days.

The nasty weather will begin tonight, with a chance of freezing rain in the northeast and the wind gusting to 50 km/h.

In the Humboldt area, there is a risk of thunderstorm activity tonight, with wind gusts to 60 tonight and 50 overnight.

That rain will change to snow tomorrow across northeast and central areas of the province.

Melfort, Tisdale, and Nipawin can expect five to 10 cm of snow both Thursday and Thursday night, with gusting winds up to 50 km/h. The high temperature should be right around the freezing mark.

On Friday, the northeast will still see periods of snow into the evening.

The Humboldt region should see about two to four cm of snow both Thursday afternoon and evening, wiht wind gusts at about 60 km/h and a high of zero.

Humboldt will also see periods of snow Friday afternoon before clearing out at night.

The late season storm has triggered a Special Weather Statement from Environment and Climate Change Canada, though northern Saskatchewan will see even more snow.

Some areas like La Ronge could see between 30 and 50 cm of snow or more. They are under an orange winter storm warning.
