Delayed openings expected

Late start to spring affecting local ball diamonds, soccer pitches

Apr 24, 2026 | 12:25 PM

This time last year, outdoor recreational areas were about to be buzzing with activity.

The dry weather in the spring of 2025 was problematic, but it did allow for outdoor activities like golf, soccer, and baseball to begin.

That definitely won’t be the case in 2026 as winter weather has left most areas covered in snow. The moisture will take some time to dry out even once we actually see spring temperatures.

Melfort facility manager Marli Shepherd told northeastNOW they would love to have ball diamonds and soccer pitches ready by now, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“[The snowfall] will unfortunately cause further delays,” explained Shepherd. “Taking everything into consideration, we are planning to have everything ready for May 11 though we are hopeful it could be sooner.”

Shepherd admits the late start to spring is unusual, as they typically aim to have those facilities ready by the end of April or first week of May depending on weather conditions.

User groups have provided feedback on City playing surfaces like the ball diamonds and soccer pitches, and Shepherd said the input is extremely important.

“It helps us understand priorities, identify areas for improvement, and make informed decisions within our available budget,” Shepherd said. “Collaboration with user groups is key to ensuring the facilities remain functional, well maintained, and responsive to community needs.”

The City and ball user groups have been getting together to discuss the state of the local ball diamonds, especially those at Spruce Haven Park. User groups previously expressed concerns about the state of the diamonds, including the uneven infield surface and more. Shepherd said discussions with those groups were very positive, with a user group agreement outlining the expectations and responsibilities of both the groups and the City.

“The agreement has also been approved by Council, which gives us a strong foundation moving forward.”

Looking ahead, Shepherd said the fields will all need to dry out before the work can begin. She said once the conditions are suitable, they can typically have the diamonds and pitches ready within a few days to a week, depending on the weather.

“Our busiest time for these facilities is in the spring and early summer as the minor ball teams and minor soccer teams are wanting to get outside as soon as they can,” said Shepherd. “Most of their season is completed before school lets out for the summer. The slow pitch teams carry on throughout the summer as well.”

Shepherd said Melfort’s recreation facilities, outdoor arenas, walking paths, and programming are a big part of what the slogan ‘Play Melfort’ represents.

“They provide opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active and engaged, and we’re fortunate to have strong community support behind them.”

The City vows to continue to work closely with user groups and staff to improve the facilities over time. Shepherd said that includes hosting a Ball Diamond & Sports Field Maintenance course this year, which she said will help build knowledge and consistency on how to care for those spaces.

“Our goal is to keep enhancing the quality and usability of our outdoor recreation areas for the whole community.”
