Melfort RCMP conduct Canada Road Safety Week check stop

Motorists in the Melfort area could see more traffic enforcement over the coming days.

It’s all part of Canada Road Safety Week, running from May 12-18.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CAPC) initiative is designed to “increase public compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives and reduce injuries on Canadian roads.”

Melfort RCMP conducted a check stop on Highway 3 on the west side of Melfort on Tuesday. Approximately 200 vehicles were checked, and there were no major violations. The stops did, however, yield some expired driver’s licenses.

“Road safety awareness campaigns are important because they provide a focused time period for police to conduct enforcement or provide educational pieces to members of the public,” Melfort RCMP S/Sgt. Ryan Case said. “Police typically conduct traffic enforcement year-round with the goal of making roadways safer, but these types of campaigns put a different emphasis on it by putting a specific name on it during a specific time of year.”

Case said the check stops are important because police are able to check a large volume of traffic in the most efficient manner possible. He added that check stops are used to check driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, and driver sobriety.

“If the police encounter something different while checking these three things, then they change gears and deal with it,” said Case.

An RCMP news release said impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada, and Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of impaired driving in the country. Road Safety Week is traditionally held up to, and including, the Victoria Day long weekend.
