Nipawin mayor praises heliport

May 13, 2026 | 4:01 PM

The heliport at the Nipawin Hospital has been open for about a year, and it’s being described as a gamechanger.

Nipawin Mayor Marlon Zacharias told northeastNOW the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission (TLDPC), made up of representatives from local communities and RMs, helped to make the project a reality.

“It has already been utilized many times throughout the last year,” Zacharias said.

He added the heliport is crucial when the time spent transporting a patient could mean the difference between life or death.

“The most important thing to remember about it is that the minutes that it saves is saving lives, and that’s why it’s so important for Nipawin,” he said.

The heliport’s location at the hospital is also incredibly important. Zacharias said whether patients are being transported to – or from – the Nipawin Hospital; the patients are being put into the hands of the people that can help them the most.

Zacharias said the Nipawin heliport benefits much more than just the immediate Nipawin area.

“It’s the entire northeast region that’s able to utilize [the heliport].”

The idea for a heliport in Nipawin stemmed from the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash south of Nipawin in 2018. Shortly after, the TLDPC was formed and spearheaded the fundraising effort for the heliport.

“Through a lot of collaboration with all of our surrounding partners, they were able to come together and put together this project for the northeast,” said Zacharias.

“We have a heliport, it is a great asset to the area, but we always hope that you never have to use it.”
