Poundmaker Cree Nation cuts waste with reusable dishware initiative
For Ira Horse, caring for the environment is more than a personal value – it is a responsibility she believes communities should actively uphold.
“I’m forever hearing at powwows and round dances that we need to respect Mother Earth. Then, after it’s all over, there is nothing but garbage all over,” said the prevention supervisor for Poundmaker Cree Nation.
Determined to put those teachings into practice, Horse introduced a more environmentally friendly approach to community gatherings.
At an event held last week for more than 300 community members, participants were encouraged to bring their own reusable tableware instead of relying on disposable plates, cups and cutlery.
