100th Anniversary

Century Celebration at Melfort Legion on Saturday

Jun 4, 2026 | 1:03 PM

The Melfort Legion is gearing up for a massive weekend.

The activity kicks off on Friday at 11:30 a.m. with their Taco in a Bag and a pop sale for $15. That will be followed by Prince Albert MP Randy Hoback’s passport clinic from 2 to 5 p.m.

The big event for the Melfort Legion is on Saturday, with the 100th Anniversary Tea being held from 2 to 4 p.m. The come-and-go tea will feature door prizes, raffle prizes, a 50/50, and a bake table.

Melfort Legion President Constance Roussel said it’s incredible that they are celebrating the century mark.

“The Legion was formed in 1926 after the First World War, recognizing that our veterans needed help, and their families, when they got back from the war,” Roussel told northeastNOW.

While the number of war veterans has declined over the years, Roussel said there is still a great interest in the Legion. RCMP members are members of the Legion, and while the number of older veterans has decreased, Roussel said there are active-duty members that are part of the Legion. She said there is always a veteran in need of help in Canada.

“Sometimes it is a local veteran that we can help with medical issues, stay at hotels,” Roussel said, adding that they can also help veterans’ families in similar ways.

Legions can also help each other out by sharing poppy funds amongst each other if one branch is short of funds.

The Melfort Legion is also big at giving back, offering bursaries for high school students in St. Brieux and Melfort, providing funds for the music festival, and more. That includes the Canada Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies, at which the Legion is heavily featured.

Roussel said you also don’t need to be a member of the Legion to enjoy their camaraderie, as they have their lounge open Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons for anyone to come and enjoy some conversations, a coffee, or a cold one.

“Even when we hold events such as the one that we’re going to have this weekend, we’re a bunch of really fun people to hang around with.”

The Melfort Legion is also home to many artifacts from various veterans, along with pictures of about 800 service members from the Melfort area that have served. Roussel said Saturday is also a great opportunity for people to come and have a look around at the various displays and pictures gathered over the years.

On Sunday, the Legion is hosting decoration day at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Melfort, starting at 1 p.m. Roussel said they will be recognizing veterans that have passed by putting flags on their tombs.

The Melfort Legion has also begun a fundraising campaign to rebuild their roof, a project that is expected to begin next spring.
