The time has come

Melfort Legion raising money for roof replacement project

May 21, 2026 | 3:38 PM

The Melfort Legion has kicked off their fundraising campaign for a new roof.

Legion president Constance Roussel told northeastNOW that the time has come to replace the roof, which has had some prior repairs done.

“We have a flat roof, so it’s time we change our roof,” Roussel said. “This year we started to get some leaks in our roof.”

The Legion building is over 100 years old and is the former SaskTel building on MacLeod Ave. E.

Roussel said the Legion has begun raising funds to go toward the roof replacement project, which they plan on starting in the spring of 2027.

Several events will serve as fundraisers for the Legion in that quest, including a ‘Taco in a bag’ sale on June 5, chili and a bun and chili cheese dogs for the car show next month, and pulled pork and poutine for the annual Back Alley Tour in July.

Businesses and residents who want to donate toward the roof replacement can contact a Legion member or send a cheque to them. Roussel said they also accept e-transfers but ask that you let them know it’s coming, so they know who is making the donation. The Legion lounge is open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and donations can be taken at that time as well.

Roussel said while the age of the building isn’t a huge hindrance when it comes to replacing the roof, the Saskatchewan weather does play a factor.

“We’re going to do a pitched roof compared to obviously continuing with a flat roof, which is better for snow sliding off of it,” Roussel said.

The Legion is also applying for grants to help with the cost of the project, which Roussel expects will exceed $150,000.

She said they are appreciative of the support they have received from local residents and businesses for the project so far.
