Two people charged in Melfort shooting

Jul 15, 2026 | 12:16 PM

Two people have been charged after continued investigation by the Melfort RCMP following a shooting earlier this month.

The early morning shooting took place on July 7 at 1 Ave. South in Melfort when a firearm went off during a fight between a group of people, resulting in two men being taken to hospital.

The next day, on July 8, police obtained and executed a search warrant at the residence, where they found a loaded crossbow, ammunition, a firearm, 75 grams of cocaine, and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

While RCMP were at the house, a man then arrived in a vehicle where police saw firearms inside. That man was arrested, with officers finding a pair of loaded guns inside the vehicle.

As a result, 23-year-old Gabriel Carballea from Melfort is charged with possession of a stolen weapon intended for a dangerous purpose, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of other stolen property, among other things.

Meanwhile, 53-year-old Jesus Carballea from Melfort has also been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, stolen property, and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The two are scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on August 31. A pair of women were also arrested at the original scene, but have since been released without charge.

Melfort RCMP continues to investigate with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Prince Albert General Investigation Section.
