Former Mustang leaves behind historic legacy at Red Deer Polytechnic

A former Melfort Mustang has wrapped up his collegiate career, leaving behind an everlasting legacy.

Twenty-five-year-old Nolan Doell played four seasons with the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, leading the team to three straight ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) titles and one league final runner-up finish.

His career also included time as an assistant captain in the 2025/26 season as well as becoming the program’s all-time goal leader.

“Becoming the program’s goal leader was obviously a huge honour for me; the guy before me held it for 32 years, and he sent me a special message after I broke it. I had always had belief in myself, knowing I could do great things, but if you had told me at the start of my career that the goal record in particular was something I’d get, I’d probably say no. Ultimately, my main goal when joining the program was to win, and the personal milestones were just a plus,” he told northeastNOW.

“It was definitely an honour to get to be an assistant captain in my final season; there were a ton of good captains before me, and the culture that was built in Red Deer was just fantastic. I was also fortunate that so many SJHL players continued to come here, a lot of whom were some of my buddies and former teammates. Ultimately deciding to come to Red Deer was clearly the best decision of my hockey career.”

In 93 career regular-season games with the Kings, Doell finished with 109 points (63G, 46A), while adding 22 points in 23 playoff contests.

“I changed so much over my four years in Red Deer, just maturing on and off the ice. I’d describe myself as a hard-working, grind-it-out forward who liked to try and make the players around me better. I also obviously liked to score goals, so huge shoutout to my linemates over the years because I wouldn’t have been able to do anything without them,” Doell added.

“I pushed myself to be the best player I could be, and if any other hockey is still in my future, I’d love to be a part of it.”

The 2001-born forward, who graduated from Red Deer Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Education, suited up for just a single season with the Mustangs prior to his time with the Kings, along with playing parts of five seasons with the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
