Former Mustang competes in second straight ball hockey National Championship

A former Melfort Mustang continued to compete at a very high level this past weekend, but it wasn’t in ice hockey.

Boston Maxwell played for the Saskatchewan Buffalo Ball Hockey Club, representing the province at a second straight National Championship.

“It’s quite a bit different, to be honest. There are a lot of things that transfer over; hockey knowledge, for one and skills with the ball and the puck are fairly similar, although it takes some getting used to. It’s definitely an adjustment for anyone coming in from ice hockey, but it’s something I wish that I had started doing sooner. Definitely something I recommend to anyone looking to add something to their summer training,” Maxwell told northeastNOW.

“This has definitely been a different route for me, and I love it. It’s a good opportunity for a guy that’s a little bit removed from competitive ice hockey, and to be able to have that camaraderie with the boys and be able to represent your province too; it’s a very cool opportunity. It’s cool to get an opportunity to play with the guys again and experience something a little bit different in the same breath.”

Maxwell spent 119 games with the Mustangs, registering 50 points.

Now, in ball hockey, he’s not only playing, but coaching as well, helping guide the women’s team in the Sask Sabres.

“Anybody who knows me in Melfort knows I don’t like doing anything halfway. Coming from ice hockey and being a little bit newer to ball hockey, it’s been a steep learning curve for me, but we’re excited. Our game is growing in a big way, so it’s just really cool to see a lot of girls getting involved and growing the game. It’s been a very cool thing to get involved in, and I’m grateful for it,” Maxwell added.

“It was definitely a humbling experience last year going to that National level, just how fast guys are, and how fast the ball moves. The speed of the game was the biggest adjustment for me, and coming into this year, I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of the team, be able to play in some different roles, and just be a more formidable opponent for who we’re playing against.”
