Star City Community Council looking for members amid school review

“The board has notified the school community council of their intentions to start the review processes in Star City for school viability this fall,” Lair explained. “We expect that board motion in September.”

The SCC, parents, and community members can come forward and make a recommendation to the board if they feel that this is the last operating year for the school, which had previously shrunk from a K to 12 to a K to 6 institution.

“They’ll come to that conclusion and chat about that, I believe is their intention, once they know more about who the other members of the groups are,” Lair said. “They may have that on their agenda as something they want to discuss, and advise the board, but that decision definitely hasn’t been made, is my understanding from the SCC.”

Other communities in the North East School Division are also going to be looking for representatives on school community councils, and Lair said anyone with interest can contact their local schools. With how busy it will be over the coming days, with teachers and staff returning this week, Lair suggested waiting until next week to reach out.

She said there are often two ways to join the SCC. An elected member controls votes for any decisions, especially in SCC finances. There are also open meeting invitations for the community to support, advise, or advocate for the school.

Lair said SCCs will also be asked to join a session to advise the NESD’s strategic plan renewal, which usually happens every four to five years.
