Bad weather interrupts combining in Manitoba

Isolated thunderstorms brought strong winds and intense rain to parts of the Manitoba over the past seven days, resulting in stops and starts to the harvest.

Oilseed specialist Sonia Wilson said the bulk of the rain came down on Aug. 30 and 31.

“We did have at least one tornado confirmed near Elkhorn, but overall, we’ve just seen some rain and isolated thunderstorms and strong winds as well, variably over the province,” Wilson said. “Definitely it has been kind of stop and go with harvest depending on how much rainfall has been received.”

Most of the winter cereals are completely harvested in all regions while there is still a little bit of winter wheat to finish up in the Southwest, according to Wilson.

“Producers have turned their attention now to spring wheat, barley, oats, and I should mention as well; field peas are pretty much harvested in most regions other than the Northwest and some in the Interlake,” Wilson added. “The spring cereals are being focused on right now and then upcoming will be canola likely followed by soybeans depending on seeding dates.”

Wilson said she expects challenges with the oat harvest.

“We’ve seen a lot of still green stems, so there’s definitely going to be top of mind working through some of those challenges for sure,” she said.

Wilson said the Manitoba harvest is roughly 15 per cent complete but will likely jump quite a bit over this next week.
