“Believe in the Gold” walk returns to Melfort

“Her mom has kept it going in memory of Jacey,” Durell said.

A big Believe in the Gold walk used to be held in Regina that raised a lot of money for Saskatchewan families, but Durell said the cities have largely stopped hosting the walk for various reasons.

“Melfort’s the only one [in Saskatchewan], so a few families get help but not as many as they used to.”

Durell said the charity certainly helped her family when they were going through their cancer battle, and she helps with the walk in Melfort in an effort to help other families that are going through similar circumstances.

Participants and spectators can meet at the Melfort Legion Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:15, with the walk up and down Main St. beginning at 4:30.

“Usually, I have a tickle truck with gold clothes so people can wear gold,” Durell said. “I’ve put posters up in the schools and asked if kids want to walk and wear their favourite superhero costume or something.”

Durell said the students have a chance to win a prize, and it’s part of an effort to get more children to be part of the walk

Prairie North Co-op is donating food for a barbecue that will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A hamburger, drink, and a cookie will cost $10, with proceeds going towards Saskatchewan families with children fighting cancer.

Durell said local businesses also donate merchandise for a raffle to help raise money during the holiday season, wrapping up at the Legion Bingo in December.
