McKechnie’s 42-save shutout leads Mustangs over Millionaires

The Melfort Mustangs are back to .500 following a 1-0 shutout victory over the Melville Millionaires Saturday night.

Melfort travelled to Melville following a 2-1 defeat at home to the Millionaires the previous night, and earned the weekend split.

“That was a stressful one, but that’s a greasy road win, and we’ll take that any day,” explained Mustangs’ assistant coach, Clarke Huxley.

Stangs’ netminder Luke McKechnie made 42 saves for his second win of the season, while the penalty unit went a perfect six-for-six.

“McKechnie was unreal. I thought we played pretty well defensively in front of him, but there were some power-play breakdowns, and he was right there and had our backs every single time. It calmed us down a bit, I think, to know that he was that steady, so I just can’t say enough about his efforts,” Huxley added.

“Penalty kill was outstanding; still got to clean it up a bit, cause we gave up some looks, but it was kind of a bend don’t break mentality, and we never broke. Like I said before, too, McKechnie had our back, and guys were laying out to block shots. Some guys also got put into roles that they aren’t usually in, just with a bit of a short bench tonight, but everyone bought in, and I thought it was an outstanding effort out there.”
