Melfort Fire Department hosting open house Thursday night

Oct 7, 2026 | 4:52 PM

An annual event that’s fun for the young and young-at-heart.

The Melfort Fire Department is hosting their open house at the fire hall Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Chief Leonard Whitney said the event gives a chance for people to see what being a firefighter is all about.

“Touring people through the hall, letting them have a look at what we do and what we have for equipment,” Whitney said.

There will be activities for the whole family and people will get an opportunity to meet the volunteer firefighters.

“We look forward to seeing a lot of the faces from our community,” Whitney said.

The open house also allows people to learn more about the history of the fire department, and some of the significant calls they have been part of over the years. Whitney said Deputy Chief Doug Walsh has been instrumental in ensuring that history has been compiled through newspaper articles and other items, and they will be on display Thursday night.

“We’re closing in on 130-ish years, so there’s lots to see,” explained Whitney.

Coffee and donuts will also be provided at the open house.
