CJVR celebrates 60 years of radio in the northeast

Oct 16, 2026 | 4:02 PM

A significant milestone for radio in the northeast.

The region became home to a brand-new radio station, CJVR, 60 years ago this month.

The station was launched in October of 1966 from its location on Main St. In Melfort, and has been there ever since to serve residents and businesses across northeast and east-central Saskatchewan.

Station manager Linda Rheaume said it’s fantastic to have been a part of the region for six decades.

“We are a community radio station for the northeast; we love serving the community and being able to offer our services for the last 60 years,” Rheaume said.

Over the years, much has changed for the radio station, and radio as a whole. Of course, technology has changed, from vinyl records, to carts, to CDs, to digital operations. Newsrooms are no longer filled with cigarette smoke and massive teletype machines, with computers being crucial to operations these days. Along with technological advancements, the operations of the company have changed over time.

Major milestones include the move of 1420 CJVR down the AM dial to 750 AM back in 1995. CJVR transitioned to the FM dial in 2002, while CKJH, operating now as Beach Radio, took over the 750 signal. The company also expanded, with Fabmar Communications launching CIXM in Whitecourt, AB. In 2006, and CHWK in Chilliwack, B.C. in 2009.

Another significant change took place in 2018, when the then-Jim Pattison Broadcast Group purchased Fabmar Communications Ltd. That sale saw Melfort’s operations fall under what is now the Pattison Media umbrella.

Rheaume said the community-focused programming including news, sports, programming, music, and more now comes to people from many different avenues, whether it be the radio in your home, business, car, or through online streaming. Despite the many evolutions of radio in Melfort and across the northeast since the radio station’s launch in 1966, one thing has remained consistent, according to Rheaume, and that’s the focus on local communities.

“Six decades on the air is a milestone that we couldn’t have reached without the support of our clients, our listeners and our wonderful staff who bring the station to life every day,” Rheaume said. ” We thank you for tuning in and making us a part of your daily routine, and we look forward to many more years of serving our communities.”
