Another former Melfort Mustang has decided where he will continue his post-secondary hockey career.

Aidyn Hutchinson has committed to the University of Northern Michigan, where he will become a Wildcat for the 2024/25 campaign.

Northern Michigan competes at the Division One level in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

“Aidyn is very deserving of his commitment to the Northern Michigan Wildcats,” said Mustangs’ head coach and general manager, Trevor Blevins.

“He came in last season with the commitment and work ethic to start the year and that resulted in a phenomenal season for him. Full of fire and a will to win, Aidyn was a true leader on our team. His ability to make plays and score will definitely benefit the Wildcats program. Congratulations on achieving your dream for a Division 1 scholarship, they are getting one of the best.”

Hutchinson arrived in Melfort ahead of the 2022/23 season, after being acquired from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

In a combined 86 regular season games over two seasons with the Mustangs, the 20-year-old had 110 points. He added 40 points in 28 playoff games, including an additional six points in five games at the Centennial Cup this year.

An assistant captain this past year, the St. Albert, Alta. native led the Stangs in scoring with 33 goals and 45 assists, good for 78 points in just 47 games.

A 2024 SJHL Champion, Hutchinson will now head to a Wildcat organization which has one national total and three Frozen Four appearances.

The six-foot-one, 172-pound forward is the first member of the Blue and Green to commit to NCAA Div I hockey, since hometown product Zac Somers did so, early last year.
