The Melfort Mustangs improved their record to 4-0 through the first two weeks of the season, after picking up another one-goal win on the road.

Melfort took down the Weyburn Red Wings by a 2-1 score Saturday night, capping off a southern swing sweep.

“My heart’s racing a little bit with all these tight games, but we’re 4-0 and we just picked up two big wins on the road. It’s never easy on the road, especially early in the year, and it was a little ugly, but the boys found a way to win again and it was a gutsy effort by them,” said Mustangs’ assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“We had to come back again, but that’s our identity, it doesn’t matter if we’re up or down, we fight to the end of the buzzer. There’s a lot of character in that room and our heart showed, so that’s awesome and I’m very excited to see that from our guys.”

Zach Turner and Zayden Sadlemyer picked up their first SJHL goals in the victory, with netminder Kristian Coombs stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced.

The victory continued the Stangs’ dominance over Weyburn as Melfort is now 12-0-0-1 in their last 13 games against the Red Wings.

“We take every game like it’s the last game of the year, no matter who we face. It’s obviously a good stat to have, but every game, it doesn’t matter who we face, we always want to win,” Scherger added.

The Blue and Green will play their next games this coming Friday and Saturday in a home-and-home with the Melville Millionaires.

The Mills are also off to a 4-0 start this season as it’s set to be a great early season test for both hockey clubs, as fans will get to witness some best-on-best action.
