Win Streak Over

Mustangs fall one win shy of history

Jan 8, 2025 | 6:20 AM

The Melfort Mustangs had their 17-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night in Battlefords.

Melfort fell 3-1 to the North Stars, as they came up just one win short of the SJHL modern-era record for most consecutive victories.

“Battleford came out and played a desperate game. When a team comes out ready to play from puck drop, it doesn’t matter if there’s a streak or not, we gotta come out ready to play as soon as the puck drops any given night. They obviously came to work; good on them, they worked hard for a full 60, and we were soft at times and just didn’t have the urgency and it showed,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

Had the Mustangs won, they would’ve broken the tie with the 2011/2012 Humboldt Broncos, who also had 17 wins in a row.

Unfortunately, the 42-21 shot clock advantage for the Stangs didn’t reflect on the scoreboard, as Scherger viewed most of them as pretty harmless.

“Justen Maric is a good goalie, but if a goalie can see all the shots coming his way, he should probably save them, or at least there’s a good chance that he will. We just didn’t pay the price tonight and get in front of the paint,” Scherger added.

Now after losing their first game in two months minus a day, their last being Nov. 8 in Flin Flon, the blue and green will have to reset and try and start a new streak this weekend, when they play a pair of games at home.

“It should be a wake-up call. Now it’s time to get desperate again. We just got to get back to work, and the biggest thing is it’s playoff hockey right now, so every single game you got to be ready, you got to be focused, and you got to come to the rink ready to work hard, every single shift.”
