A pair of locals are nominated for Saskatchewan Sport Awards.

The 40th annual awards ceremony will be held in Saskatoon later this month.

Melfort’s Julie Kozun is up for Female Athlete of the Year.

Kozun was nominated by the public and supported by Sask Volleyball. She was the lone Saskatchewan athlete on Canada’s Paralympic volleyball team that took home the bronze from the 2024 games.

Carrot River native Tyrell Sawatzky has been nominated by Saskatchewan Athletics for the Coach of the Year award.

The former high school standout was recognized as the 2024 Saskatchewan Athletics Coach of the Year for leading two Para athletes to set Canadian Records in the F13 javelin and the F56 javelin and shot put. Sawatzky also coached an athlete to the qualifying standard for the 2024 Paralympic Games.

“Each award recipient and finalist represent the perseverance of our province and the contributions that are made to nurture sport provincially, nationally, and internationally,” said Luke Flegel, Volunteer Board Chair for Sask Sport. “Saskatchewan is proud of those who represent the province at all levels of competition.

The awards will be celebrated with a gala Jan. 30 at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon.
