Unity in the Community cultural event coming to Porcupine Plain

Feb 4, 2025 | 4:35 PM

An opportunity to learn about a variety of cultures and have some fun along the way.

The third annual Unity in the Community event in Porcupine Plain is coming up on Saturday at the Community Hall.

The event features cultural food, displays, and entertainment from several cultures.

Métis Nation Saskatchewan Eastern Region II Regional Director Brent Digness told northeastNOW two more cultures joined the event for 2025.

Music is by the Dean Smith band, and the event will also have the Creeland Dancers featuring Brian Sklar. There will also be First Nations drumming and Porcupine Plain Filipino dancers.

“We’ve also got the Ukrainian dancers coming this year, which is also a highlight,” Digness said.

He added the idea behind the Unity in the Community events across the region is all about coming together to celebrate the different cultures in the area.

Digness said he came to the realization one day that if it’s going to come to reconciliation, he would have to begin with himself.

“I had to begin reconciling with myself and the community I lived in,” he said.

After that, Digness said he’s been able to build a relationship within communities in the northeast like Melfort, Carrot River, Hudson Bay, Nipawin, Porcupine Plain, and more.

“Now these communities are all hosting different-named events, but with similar ideas behind [them],” Digness said.

Doors open at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the program starting at 1:15, as Digness MC’s the event. The food booths will open at 2 p.m.

The bucket raffle at the event will benefit the Porcupine Plain Fire Department.
