More snow

Northeast to escape worst of snow to pummel southern Sask.

Expect another dump of snow in the northeast over the next day or so.

However, it’s relatively minor in comparison to what people in southern Saskatchewan will see.

Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Danielle Desjardins said snowfall regions drop significantly from Melfort to areas north of the city.

“Today we’re going to see about two to four centmetres but things don’t start ramping up more until tonight,” Desjardins explained. “Still expecting about five to 10 centimetres of snow [tonight].”

Areas further south are expecting more snow with the system moving through the province. Humboldt is anticipated to get five to 10 centimetres both today and tonight, along with stronger winds that will cause some blowing snow into tomorrow.

“The further south you are, the closer you are to kind of getting those higher amounts,” Desjardins said.

Most of southern Saskatchewan is under a snowfall warning, with amounts up to 20 cm or more expected along with windy conditions.

Despite that, the light, fluffy snow that we will see in the northeast could still cause some visibility issues on the highways when vehicles are driving past. Desjardins recommended people take their time to get to their destination.

Fortunately for Melfort and the northeast, the wind shouldn’t be nearly as strong and likely won’t cause much drifting. Desjardins said there may be a little blowing snow, but nothing like we’ve seen, including the system last month that saw wind gusts in some cases up to 90 km/h.

Temperatures will also remain below normal for the foreseeable future. Desjardins said we are stuck in the pattern of cooler-than-normal temperatures, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Daytime highs will stay in the minus-teens in the coming days, with it becoming even colder at the start of next week. Desjardins said the temperatures likely won’t improve until we approach Valentine’s Day.
