An event in Melfort will honour women, just ahead of International Women’s Day.

The Marguerite Riel Centre is hosting their third annual Women’s Empowerment Gathering at the Kerry Vickar Centre on Friday.

Stephanie Turner of the Marguerite Riel Centre said they chose to hold the event adjacent to the international celebration of women.

“[The event is] to recognize and celebrate women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements,” Turner said.

The gathering is designed to allow women to connect and learn from each other, said Turner.

“The conference will include speakers who will share their experiences and focus on empowering women,” explained Turner. “The goal is to inspire and encourage women to embrace their full potential in their family, communities, or workplace setting.”

The event features six guest speakers with a wide variety of topics to discuss.

  • Canadian Paralympic athlete Julie Kozun will be one of the guest speakers. She won a bronze medal in the Paralympic Games in Paris last summer in sitting volleyball.
  • Kama Bauer, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with Prairie Hope Wellness, will share her experiences in the field of addictions and mental health.
  • Kryztle Shewchuk will share her story of being an injury survivor and competing in prestigious global sailing competitions.
  • Jennifer Sanderson of Winyan Healing Energy is a Dakota healer that offers various healing for staff, youth, and families.
  • Str8 Up, a group from Saskatoon that helps people overcome gang and street life, and addictions.
  • Desiree Dreaver, an advocate for children and women’s safety, will close out the presentations.

Turner said the Marguerite Riel Centre extends their gratitude for their ongoing support.

“Their involvement is what makes events like this possible, and we’re excited to continue working together to make a positive impact in our community,” Turner said.

The event starts Friday at 9 a.m., and you can call the Marguerite Riel Centre at 306-752-4950 to register.
