Bulking up the backend

Mustangs add former first overall pick in trade with Klippers

The Melfort Mustangs have made a trade to bolster their backend.

Melfort is acquiring former number one overall pick, Rhett Vedress, from the Kindersley Klippers.

In exchange, the Mustangs are sending away a player development fee and a 2027 third-round pick.

Vedress, a native of Annaheim, Saskatchewan, has spent parts of the last three seasons in the SJHL, splitting time between the Klippers and the Weyburn Red Wings.

The first selection in the 2022 SJHL Draft, Vedress played 50 games in Weyburn, posting seven points across the 2022/23, 2023/24, and 2024/25 seasons.

Meanwhile, in 25 games in Kindersley this past year, the 6-2, 181-pound defenceman racked up two points.

The 2006-born Vedress adds depth to the Stangs’ D-core, which lost five of its eight regular D-men from last year’s campaign this offseason.

The Blue and Green have three exhibition games left on their schedule this week, after taking down the Nipawin Hawks Monday night in comeback fashion.

Melfort will travel to Nipawin on Tuesday for the final leg of the home-and-home set, before taking on the Humboldt Broncos on Friday and Saturday.

The 19-year-old Vedress could make his Mustangs debut during one of these three contests.
