Mustangs win up and down affair with Terriers

Oct 18, 2025 | 3:32 AM

Two good periods and one bad one for the Melfort Mustangs on Friday night ultimately led them to a 5-4 victory over the Yorkton Terriers.

Melfort outscored the Terriers a combined 4-0 in periods one and three, but a poor second period nearly cost the Mustangs the game.

“Last weekend we had a tough weekend, so this week we came back, got back to the drawing board, and worked really hard on the D zone. Just picking up and knowing where our spots are, I thought we played a little bit better tonight, but still a lot to work on, so we’re getting there,” explained forward Danton Cox.

“Our goal is to play a full 60, come Christmas time, that’s going to be our milestone to hopefully be able to achieve, so we’re still working at that every day.”

Cox’s line was part of every goal the Stangs scored, as he himself had three assists, while Will Munro had two goals and a helper, and Bryson Aikens had a hat trick and an assist.

The win snapped a two-game skid for the Blue and Green, as they’ll now go for the weekend sweep tomorrow in Yorkton.

“I think our line’s forecheck was outstanding tonight, we were getting in hard, finishing our first check, and Yorkton’s D just couldn’t really handle it. We were just turning over pucks, and those two guys (Munro and Aikens) did a great job of finding the back of the net,” Cox added.

“It’s an easy rink to play in, so it should be fun. We just gotta stick to our basics, be good on the forecheck, tough in the D zone, and win lots of puck battles. I think our work ethic will help us come out on top.”
