Humboldt Holiday Trail a hit

Inaugural Humboldt Holiday Trail wrapping up with Walk Night on Tuesday

The Humboldt Holiday Trail was a big hit in its first year.

Marketing and Communications Coordinator Angie Rolheiser told northeastNOW they were overwhelmed with the response.

“Wasn’t sure what to expect going in but in the first weekend we saw over 100 vehicles going through.”

Rolheiser said they welcomed 499 vehicles in all during the holiday season, with $5,460 raised for local community and non-profit organizations. Each participating group volunteered one night at the admission gate, receiving proceeds from that shift.

The Holiday Trail had a helping hand from Humboldt native Rick Steffen, formerly of the Enchanted Forest in Saskatoon. Rolheiser said despite the limited time and budget, Steffen was able to build a waving Santa Claus, a Rudolph, and an elf that helped patrons navigate the trail by pointing directions. Steffen also made three light-up signs for the event’s platinum sponsors that can be used again next year.

“He has said that he’s on board to help us for next year, so now that he’s able to help us we’re starting some planning already for what he might be able to make for us for next year’s event.”

Rolheiser said she took some of her inspiration from the Melfort Christmas Lights Tour held at the Melfort Campground.

“I loved how they incorporated those community groups working the admission gate for the proceeds,” Rolheiser explained.

The City of Humboldt is hosting a special Walk Night on Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Rolheiser said they want to show their appreciation to the community for their support of the drive-thru nights. Sponsors and other dignitaries kicked off the event in a similar fashion, and Rolheiser said it was such a fun night they wanted to invite the public to have that same experience.
