Year in Review: Nipawin, Gronlid celebrate 100 years

Jan 1, 2026 | 8:00 AM

Two huge celebrations happened in the region this past year as Nipawin and Gronlid both hit the century mark.

Both communities turned 100 years old, where dignitaries at Nipawin’s birthday celebration in July included Premier Scott Moe and Carrot River Valley MLA Terri Bromm.

The festivities included a homecoming meet-and-greet, car show, fire hall open house, the Heliport’s grand opening, a street dance, street fair, fireworks, and a parade leading into the Nipawin Exhibition.

Nipawin’s history is unusual in that the town moved about seven kilometres in order to be closer to the rail line.

“It just shows the importance of the rail line then and shows our commitment to growth and being such a strong community working together,” Nipawin mayor Marlon Zacharias said, adding such a move would have been a tremendous task back then.

“If you were to undertake something like that today, it would be virtually impossible to move a community like that.”

He called the celebrations a once-in-a-lifetime event.

“Not everybody gets to experience a one-hundredth celebration in their community, and we are lucky enough to be able to do that this year,” Zacharias said.

Meanwhile, Gronlid’s celebration included a pancake breakfast, a parade, a car show, and a variety of events catering to adults and children.

Guest speakers were on hand for the official celebration, and the museum was open for people to learn more about the community’s history.

A dance was held that evening, along with a fireworks display, while a church service and brunch were held the following morning.
