Infrastructure, taxation among issues discussed at Coffee with Council in Melfort

Momentum continues to grow for Coffee with Council in Melfort.

The first event at the Kerry Vickar Centre saw just a few people attend, but last night’s crowd was much larger, with four tables jam-packed with residents looking to discuss the issues affecting them.

“A fantastic turnout to Coffee with Council,” Coun. Rick Fettes told northeastNOW. “We had a room full of people with all different concerns. It was fantastic.”

Coun. Tara Muntain said the relaxed atmosphere and come-and-go style gives people a chance to go from table-to-table and join conversations between residents and council.

Members of council were vigorously taking notes about questions and concerns posed to them, and Muntain said that gives councillors a chance to get answers to those questions if they don’t know them off hand. The notes also give council an idea of what concerns the public have in the community, and the hot-button topics and issues that are at the forefront.

There were many different topics of discussion, including the weather, roads and other infrastructure, drainage issues, taxation, and the future of the Historic Post Office and Melfort Water Tower.

“There were questions that maybe we hadn’t thought about, and questions that we’ll be able to follow up on,” Muntain said. She added the informal get-together is a great way to open communication channels between residents and elected officials.

The next Coffee with Council will be in about three or four months, but Muntain said the entire council is always open to hear about any questions or concerns residents may have.
