Nipawin fire crews respond to bale, brush fires on Wednesday

The Nipawin Fire Department was called to a pair of fires on Wednesday. 

A bale fire northeast of White Fox started just after noon, and about a dozen bales were burning by the time crews arrived. 

The department said the landowners separated some of the bales with a tractor but had to retreat due to smoke and mechanical difficulties. 

Firefighters unrolled the straw to prevent the fire from getting into the centre of the bales. 

When a tanker truck was returning to Nipawin to refill, a second call came about a brush fire south of Boughen Nurseries.

The landowner and neighbours had managed to stop the spread by the time crews arrived to saturate the area. 

A third call that afternoon from Nipawin was a false alarm. 

The department said the ground and the grass may have been wet at the time, but the branches above are very dry.
