An exciting event is in the works for National Indigenous People’s Day in Humboldt.

Horizon School Division will host the Humboldt Partnership Pow Wow on Thursday.

“This event is not merely a cultural festival; it’s a foundational civic action that directly addresses the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call To Action (specifically regarding public education and civic inclusion),” Superintendent of Indigenous Education Bryan McNabb told northeastNOW.

“By creating this space, the Horizon Indigenous Education team plans to tangibly demonstrate its commitment to reconciliation, educate school-age students and people of all ages, establish partnerships, and welcome newcomers into a shared cultural understanding and significant enrich its civic identity in the City of Humboldt.”

The Humboldt Partnership Pow Wow will be held at the Elgar Petersen Arena, starting with presentations at 10 a.m., which include a hoop dancer and a Métis jigging group.

The pow wow will start at noon with a grand entry of dancers and dignitaries, and will last until 8 p.m. Over 1,000 students will be at the event, and McNabb said the public is welcome to attend.

McNabb said the event is a true form of treaty education and reconciliation.

“This area of the province has not held an Indigenous celebration of this magnitude and will be historic as the inaugural event hosted within city limits,” said McNabb. “This will provide the non-indigenous population to experience and take part in an Indigenous cultural celebration. This will also coincide with National Indigenous Peoples Day.”

The event is hosted by Horizon School Division in partnership with the City of Humboldt, George Gordon First Nation/George Gordon Developments Inc., and Carlton Trail Regional College. The theme is “Honoring the Land and its Relations” in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
